Neopterygian node F (defining node of the HALECOSTOMI): Supramaxilla present, quadratojugal lost or fused into another element.

Neopterygian node G (defining node of the HALECOMORPHI): Jaw articulation uses both sympletic sympletic and quadrate bones.

 

The extant bowfin is a medium-sized predator (0.5-1 metre in length) living in North American freshwaters and preying on a very wide variety and size range of organisms. Amia is even known to occasionally prey on animals as large as itself.
