Elopomorpha

Two extant elopomorphs - Anguilla, left - the eel - and Megalops, right - the tarpon.

Neopterygian node N (defining node of the ELOPOCEPHALA): The second ural centrum is overlain by two anteriorly extending uroneurals.

The cohort elopomorpha is known from the Early Cretaceous, and contains around 800 species including eels, tarpons and bone-fishes. Although this group contains extreme forms, elopomorphs can be grouped together with certainty on the basis of their undergoing a specialised thin and leaf-shaped marine larval stage, the leptocephalus, which can float long distances before their metamorphosis.
