This Subdivision of basal neopterygians arose in the Triassic surviving today with the living bowfin. Characteristics of halecomorphs include a specialised jaw joint involving the sympletic and quadrate.
Combined with the Teleostei, the Halecomorphi forms the Halecostomi division of actinopterygians.
