The subdivision Neoteleostei contains the vast majority of the advanced neognaths, some 15 000 species in total.
Neoteleosts are characterised by the presence of a specialised muscle in the throat region enabling more precise manipulation of prey items by controlling the pharyngeal toothplates in the roof of the mouth.
The basal extant neoteleosts include the stomiiforms, aulopiformes and myctophiformes.
