Neopterygian node V (defining node of the ACANTHOMORPHA): Presence of 'true' dorsal and anal fin spines, presence of rostral cartilage and absence of caudal ones, distally ossified medial pelvic process.
The polymixiiform fish are a group of relatively small fish possessing deep, laterally compressed bodies, with very anteriorly placed pelvic fins - just below the pectorals.
