- The great Permian extinction, which occurred approximately
251 million years ago, set the stage for the massive terrestrial
invasion of the dinosaurs some 20 million years later.
- During the Triassic period, dinosaurs started to diversify,
thriving throughout the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods until
their extinction 65 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous
period.
