Monotremes

The Duck Billed Platypus is an example of a monotreme and they are present in Australia and New Guinea. They differ from the other mammals because they lay eggs rather than give birth to live young.

The fossil evidence for early monotremes is fragmentary consisting of jaw fragments from the lower Cretaceous in Australia.
