Nutrition and Diet

Introduction.

Carnivores.

Omnivores
Insect-omnivores - predominantly South American, with 26 out of 46 well studied species having this diet, including various mouse opossums.

Mouse Opossum

Frugi-omnivores - only South American, including black-shouldered opossums, with no Australian equivalent. Diet consists mostly of fruit and foliage.

Fungi-omnivores - only Australian, with no South American equivalent. All members of the Potoroidea are fungi-omnivores.

Generalists - species which will eat all food types without specialisation. These include the didelphimorphians of the Americas and the bandicoots of Australasia.
