An Early Reconstruction of Dinosaurs

This is a drawing of some dinosaur models made in Victorian times by Benjamin Hawkins, aided by the palaeontologist Richard Owen. When the models were finished, in 1853, they held a dinner inside the model of Iguanodon. The models are still on display in London on an island at Crystal Palace.

  • Center Iguanodon a dinosaur. Notice the spike on its nose. This has now been discovered to be a thumb, attached to the hand.
  • Right Hylaeosaurus a dinosaur.
  • Left (background) Anoplotherium a (Tertiary) mammal.
  • Front right Dicynodon.
  • Front left Labyrinthodon an amphibian.
Notice how Hawkins has used modern animals such as turtles and frogs as a base for his models.
